  4. flew threw an ash cloud down near NZ in the 1980s. we were over 40K feet and still in it. The air looked clear and the WX radar was not painting anything. smelled like flint and burned gunpowder coming out of the vents. had to repaint the leading edges and take a really hard look at the engines and radomes. did not want a repeat of that, thankyouverymuch....

  5. Cumulus Mammatus: As in Hanging Mammary. Downward moving air causes these clouds to hang from the base of another cloud - most often a cumulonimbus or an altostratus. This type of "boiling" cloud appears at the beginning of a squall or just before. It's my favorite kind of cloud...it's weather geek / guy thing.
