British single seat Avro Type F. The first aircraft in the world to feature a completely enclosed cabin.

The propeller looks too big.

  1. Fully enclosed cabin, but obviously not pressurized.

    1. I'd probably fall through the bottom. Can't get much more rickety looking than that.

  2. Times have changed - but now it would be called an 'ultralight' so maybe they haven't changed completely.

  3. "Propeller looks too big" Yes. Old, big, non laminated wood propeller being swung by a low RPM low power engine. Needed to be very big to get the job done.

  4. Sending on to my pilot buddy, to see what he says about it. It looks like fun, to me.

  5. There is one of theses - or very similar - on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, UK. See this link on a trip advisor site: https://www.tripadvisor.com/LocationPhotoDirectLink-g187069-d212251-i227025053-Museum_of_Science_Industry-Manchester_Greater_Manchester_England.html

And against the wall in the picture's background you can see the racks of a replica of the world's first programmable computer, the Small Scale Experimental Machine, or "Baby". It's a cool museum if you are into the evolution of technology. Many old steam engines, locomotives, airplanes, etc.
